2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 Performance & Capability
The Silverado 1500 is a well-rounded truck with a wide variety of features, from the latest driver-assistance and safety tech to infotainment and specialized features on certain trims, like off-road gear on the Trail Boss and ZR2 and luxurious amenities on the High Country. But as your Chevrolet dealer in Monroe, LA, we know that when it comes to pickup trucks, performance and capability are some of the most important factors to consider.
The 2023 Silverado is available with several different powertrains, each of which brings different strengths to the table. Whether you’re looking for an affordable option, the most powerful engine available, or a good balance between capability and fuel efficiency, Chevy’s got something that will suit your needs. Let’s take a deep dive into each engine option to see how the Silverado 1500 delivers when it comes to performance, and then go over some of its unique features that make towing easier.
2.7L Turbo High-Output Engine
This base engine comes standard on the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss trims, so if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, it’s certainly worth considering. It’s also the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered engine in the lineup, getting up to 22 MPG on the highway, according to the EPA. If you stick with it instead of opting for a V8, you’ll save some money in the long run by avoiding pain at the pump. It may be the base engine, but this turbocharged option still provides 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, which should be plenty for most truck drivers. A 2023 Silverado 1500 with this engine under the hood can tow up to 9,500 lbs.

5.3L Ecotec3 V8 Engine
If you’re looking for the kind of power that only a V8 can deliver, then Chevy gives you two different options to choose from. The 5.3L engine comes standard on the LTZ and High Country trims and is an option on the WT, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss trims. With 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, it’s plenty powerful, bringing the 2023 Silverado 1500’s maximum towing capacity up to 11,300 lbs. Beyond towing, this engine can also satisfy a need for speed. A Silverado with this V8 under the hood can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which is the kind of power that can be quite useful if you ever need to pass a slow-moving semi on I-20.
6.2L Ecotec3 V8 Engine
The more powerful 6.2L V8 only comes standard on the rugged off-road ZR2 trim, but it’s available as an upgrade on the Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country trims as well. With 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, this one truly packs a punch and unlocks the 2023 Silverado 1500’s absolute maximum towing capacity: a whopping 13,300 lbs. It’s also even quicker than the 5.3L, going from zero to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. In an off-road model like the ZR2, that means you can feel the rush of cruising through open country and having adventures you’ll never forget.
3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel Engine
Gasoline may be the most common fuel for pickup trucks, but it’s not the only option on the table. While Chevy’s diesel engine doesn’t come standard on any trim, it’s available on every trim except for the WT, Custom, and ZR2. One big advantage of diesel is its fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, the diesel-powered 2023 Silverado 1500 is rated at up to 29 MPG on the highway, which puts it well ahead of any of the gas-powered options. Because a gallon of diesel contains more energy than a gallon of gas, the diesel truck gets more range, even though it has the same tank size as a gasoline-powered Silverado. According to the EPA, a 2WD Silverado 1500 with the Duramax engine has a range of 624 miles. That can be a lifesaver if you often drive out to remote areas where you can’t find a gas station every few miles.
As expected of a diesel engine, the Duramax only offers a relatively unimpressive 305 hp. However, it beats out even the 6.2L V8 in a head-to-head torque comparison, offering a maximum torque of 495 lb-ft. This means the diesel engine can provide a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 lbs, the same as the most powerful gas-powered V8. Because of that lower horsepower rating, a Silverado with the diesel engine won’t be able to accelerate quite as quickly as its gas-powered counterparts, but when it comes to quiet and smooth operation, the two types of fuel offer a nearly identical driving experience.

Towing & Trailering Features
Raw power may be the main factor when it comes to towing, but it’s not the only thing to think about. Bringing a heavy trailer along for the ride can be dangerous, and it’s important to be knowledgeable about your truck and trailer and stay aware of your surroundings during the drive. Luckily, Chevy has several available driver-assist features that can help.
Trailer sway control, hill start assist, and auto grade braking all work to keep the driver in control of the truck at all times, even in adverse conditions like heavy winds or steep inclines. Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert comes in handy while towing on the highway, giving you an extra tool to make sure you’re clear to change lanes since visibility can be an issue when a large trailer is blocking your line of sight. Speaking of visibility, the Silverado is available with up to eight cameras that work together to provide fourteen different views, so you can check in on what’s going on all around your truck.
Chevy’s Trailer App is another tool you can use to tow safely and smartly. Before you leave, you can use the pre-departure checklist to make sure that everything is secure and ready to go. You can also use the in-app light test to make sure that your trailer’s brake lights and turn signals are in working order. Maintenance reminders keep track of when you should visit us for service for things like your trailer’s brakes and tires based on time passed or mileage traveled. The system can also monitor your trailer’s tire pressure and temperature. With customized trailer profiles, you can save the information for multiple trailers and have it on hand for later.
